South African Subantarctic Marion Island Overwintering Team Returns to Warm Welcome in Cape Town
The Marion 82 team ensured smooth station operations while conducting extensive scientific research on climate, biodiversity, oceanography, and environmental change.
On Wednesday, a welcome ceremony on the S.A. Agulhas II celebrated their return, with Minister Willie Aucamp handing out certificates and the Antarctic Legacy of South Africa Project awarding each member for their dedication.
The mission continues the South African National Antarctic Program’s proud tradition of advancing scientific research in one of the world’s most remote and environmentally significant regions, while safeguarding South Africa’s interests in the Antarctic and Subantarctic territories.
