This occasion—implemented "everywhere in the world, where the peacekeepers are"—is "a resolution and a declaration by the United Nations, and it is an international announcement," Nditsheni Ernest Singo, Director of Peace Support Operations at the Joint Operations Headquarters, told Sputnik Africa.
Families of fallen soldiers "are called to come and be part of this special occasion" as "the Defense Force continues to mourn and honor them, as they died for the good cause," Thabo Masweu, Chaplain General of the SA National Defense Force, told Sputnik Africa.
"It symbolizes more than any of us who are still alive, who have not lost a soldier, would understand," Masweu added.
The International Day of UN Peacekeepers—held annually on May 29—pays tribute to those who have served and continue to serve in UN peacekeeping operations and honors those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace.
