'Russia's Firm Stance is Regarded as Major Support for Africa,' Ethiopian Expert Says
Although "Africa is physically independent from colonialism," it currently stays under "persistent Western pressure," Yayew Genet, assistant professor of political science and international relations at Bahir Dar University, told Sputnik Africa, commenting on Russian FM's advocacy for fair representation for Africa.
"Alternatives like BRICS within South-South cooperation"—by allowing "the use of alternative local currencies"—improve conditions, bringing about "financial independence."
Africa, with its "vast population" and resources, does not have "adequate representation" in the UN, while Russia—"a nation that possesses veto power"—advocates for restructuring "the current world order," being "a great source of strength for Africa," he explained.
"We say Africa must govern herself, [...] all institutions and other African states must be led by and serve Africans."
Africa's "indigenous mechanisms" need to be utilized, as "vast amounts of knowledge are found within Africa," he added.
