Africa Must Have Tools to Defend Itself—Russia Partnership a Positive Step, Says Analyst

African countries urgently need military capabilities to defend their people, making partnerships like the one with Russia increasingly important, said South African analyst Rasigan Maharajh.

Genuine African-led negotiations with Moscow would counter neo-colonial powers seeking to reassert control over the continent, he told Sputnik Africa on the sidelines of the 2026 International Security Forum in Moscow.

On UN reform, Maharajh said it is “not democratic” for Africa—the third largest population bloc—to have no permanent Security Council seat.

He also condemned the US proposal linking a $2 billion health deal to Zambia’s mineral resources and genetic data as “completely unacceptable,” calling such conditioning a form of neo-colonial coercion that must be stopped.

Maharajh called on Africans, Asians, Europeans, and all peoples to support multipolarity as the only way forward.
