Egypt Renews Push for Nuclear-Free Middle East After NPT Talks Fail: MFA
Cairo called for concrete steps toward nuclear disarmament and a WMD-free zone after the latest UN nuclear treaty review conference collapsed, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in statement.
Takeaways from the statement:
🟠The 11th NPT Review Conference in New York ended without a final agreement—a "missed opportunity," Cairo said.
🟠Egypt reaffirmed the 1995 resolution on a WMD-free zone, a key part of the deal that extended the NPT indefinitely.
🟠The statement stressed the treaty’s importance for global security and urged all states, especially in the Middle East, to join the non-proliferation regime.
🟠Cairo also reiterated the right to peaceful nuclear energy under IAEA supervision and called for preventing catastrophic consequences of any nuclear weapon use.
