Beyond Dar es Salaam: Tanzanian Official Unveils Plans for a New SADC Gateway

The Tunduma-Nakonde crossing already handles about 75% of outbound cargo from Dar es Salaam port—roughly 9.5 million tonnes yearly, serving Zambia, Malawi, and the DRC, Songwe Regional Commissioner Jabiri Omari Makame told Sputnik Africa.

Why this border hub matters:

Saves time and costs: Traders from Congo, Malawi, and Zambia can be served directly at the border instead of traveling all the way to Dar es Salaam.

Eases congestion: Road expansions, a new dry port, and dedicated parking areas will speed up border crossings.

Strengthens logistics: As the main land extension of Dar es Salaam port, upgrades here improve the entire trade corridor to SADC.
