Zimbabwe Must Meet SPS Standards to Reap China’s Zero-Tariff Benefits: Trade Commission
To fully capitalize on China’s duty‑free access for African exports, Zimbabwe needs to strengthen its ability to comply with sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) requirements, the country’s Competition and Tariff Commission said.
Horticulture is emerging as a strategic sector in bilateral trade, but SPS measures act as technical gatekeepers for developing nations, the CTC noted.
For Zimbabwe, meeting these standards is just as critical as tariff preferences, the commission stressed.
It called for investments in compliance systems and inclusive value chains—such as outgrower schemes and cooperative models—to turn SPS protocols from barriers into enablers, ensuring Zimbabwean products remain competitive and trusted in the Chinese market.
