Appointment of First Female Chief Justice in Zimbabwe Can Reform Legal Sector & Elevate Women’s Voices: Political Analyst
“Women are symbolically annihilated in all spheres of life, not only here in Zimbabwe, but in other countries in southern Africa, maybe because of traditional practices, because of our culture, but because she is now leading the sector and because of her interest in women's law, she can use this space to amplify the voices of women, to push for the rights and freedoms of women and to frame their issues, especially when it comes to family and inheritance law, because she has also an interest in those areas,” Lazarus Sauti from the University of Zimbabwe told Sputnik Africa.
According to the speaker, “the role of Justice Gwaunza now is so clear” in the following areas:
🟠promoting constitutionalism;
🟠protecting national sovereignty;
🟠strengthening rights, accountability, and judicial independence;
🟠addressing human trafficking, which mostly affects girls and women;
🟠advancing legal-assistance training for judges, prosecutors, police, court registrars, and traditional leaders;
🟠building a bottom-up justice approach by appointing judicial liaison officers in marginalized and rural communities.
