Ban on Raw Coffee Export Could 'Have Huge Implications for Economy & Population of Uganda,' Coffee Company Owner Says
Value addition on coffee domestically "can make a difference if certain things are done better," Endre Vestvik told Sputnik Africa.
Key benefits of coffee value addition, according to Vestvik:
Creates jobs, knowledge, and skills across a whole ecosystem, including packaging, marketing, logistics, accounting, and legal services;
Provides high-value employment for children of Uganda's two million coffee farmers;
Potentially improves "the livelihoods of farmers."
However, "consumers in the main coffee markets" are loyal to established brands, making it very difficult for "an unknown brand from Africa" to win them over, Vestvik noted.
"So we would need a new and better fair-trade type of certification, which shows that this coffee has the value addition done at source."
