Zimbabwe Appoints First-Ever Female Chief Justice

Key achievements of Gwaunza:

Among the first Black women to obtain a law degree in Zimbabwe;

Co-founded and nationally coordinated the Women and Law in Southern Africa Research Project;

Served as Director of Legal Aid and later Director of Legal Affairs in the ministries of Justice and Community Development;

Appointed High Court judge in 1998, elevated to Supreme Court in 2002;

Elected as a judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
