One Year of Light: Eskom Breaks Load-Shedding Curse After Years of Blackouts, SA Gov't Says
The Electricity Supply Commission (Eskom) improved performance through stronger maintenance, restored units, and better coordination.
Looking ahead, a ~$364 million allocation for 2026/27 is expected to unlock roughly $132 billion in energy infrastructure investment, according to the South African government's statement.
“South Africa now has a stable electricity platform to enable an orderly transformation of the industry, as no energy market liberalization in the world has been successful without a stable incumbent,” Eskom CEO Dan Marokane said.
What drove Eskom's milestone?
Energy availability factor: up from 54.56% to 65.16%
Unplanned outages: down from 32.34% to 22.88%
Diesel spending: cut by 81%
