'Era of Western Legal Universalism as Default Global Governance is Over': Sudanese Expert

The ICC cannot claim a universal jurisdiction, since the most powerful global nations "are almost uniformly outside its reach," Dr. Mohammed Hussain AbdAlwahid, senior lecturer from Russia's Financial University, told Sputnik Africa.

Creating a more just international legal system requires rejecting the use of the ICC as a geopolitical weapon, he noted.

Although reform of the ICC is "conceivable," it is complicated to improve this system, as certain nations have either withdrawn from its jurisdiction or never ratified the Rome Statute on which the ICC is based, the speaker stressed.

"And that work, the intellectual, diplomatic, and institutional work of building genuine global justice, is the work of our generation, of scholars, of diplomats, and of citizens across Africa, Russia, and the Global South," the expert concluded.
