Tanzania Launches $11.2 Million Rural Telecom Project to Connect 3 Million People: Fund

The government is building 287 communication towers in underserved areas under Phase 10 of its rural communications expansion program, acting CEO of Universal Communications Service Access Fund (UCSAF), Albert Richard, announced.

The 15‑month project, launched in December 2025, targets 287 wards across Tanzanian regions, including Mwanza, Rukwa, Manyara, and Zanzibar, and benefits nearly 3 million residents in 359 villages.

Airtel, Vodacom, Yas, and TTC will implement the towers. The initiative follows a recently completed 758‑tower project that connected 8.5 million Tanzanians.

UCSAF is now upgrading towers to 3G/4G and expanding digital access in schools, including assistive devices for special needs students, the CEO noted.

A Phase 11 project is planned for other key infrastructure corridors, Richard concluded.
