WHO Declares Ebola Outbreak in DRC, Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern

"The Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC), but does not meet the criteria of pandemic emergency," the WHO announced.

A PHEIC requires a coordinated international response, with countries legally bound to act under the International Health Regulations.

To date, 13 lab‑confirmed cases and four deaths have been reported in the DRC, along with 246 suspected cases and 65 possible outbreak‑related deaths under investigation, per the Africa CDC.

Meanwhile, Uganda declared a heightened alert on Friday due to the outbreak. In late April, the country's Health Ministry had declared the end of a previous Ebola outbreak following its first vaccine trial.
