End of Maize Imports in Cameroon: Way to Decongest Market—Cameroonian Expert
Currently, Cameroonian producers are experiencing market saturation, Jean Marie Biada, a financial expert, told Sputnik Africa.
"The producer is forced to sell his product at a selling price lower than his cost price," he noted.
According to the speaker, the country must also focus on improving crops through better irrigation systems.
"We can no longer continue to cultivate as we used to, on the mountainsides — the cost is very high. We are starting to think about irrigated maize cultivation. Yields with irrigated maize sometimes reach around 10 tonnes per hectare. In the case of Cameroon, the tonnage does not exceed 5 tonnes per hectare," he emphasized.
Recently, the Cameroonian government has decided to suspend maize imports to protect local farmers, according to media reports. Cameroonian producers cannot sell massive maize stockpiles, as imports reportedly continue to saturate the market.
A video from social media allegedly shows a corn farming field in Cameroon.
