Return to Normal Life: Challenges of Demining in Senegal's Casamance Region—Senegalese Expert

The presence of explosive devices influences the country both "culturally and economically," Henry Ndecky, coordinator of civil society organizations for peace in Casamance, told Sputnik Africa.

According to the authorities, approximately 1 million square meters of land are still known to be high-risk.

The demining will allow the population to "return very quickly and properly," the expert noted.

Casamance was at war for four decades since the 1980s. This region in southern Senegal is riddled with landmines that have officially caused 870 casualties. A peace agreement was signed in February 2025 between the Senegalese state and the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance.

A video from social media shows peaceful life of Senegalese citizens in Casamance.
