It’s Legal Obligation: Agronomist Comments on Zimbabwe's Land Decision

Zimbabwe’s plan to return 67 farms to former foreign owners should be understood less as a political retreat and more as a legal obligation, Zimbabwean agronomist and land expert Grant Nzombe told Sputnik Africa.

He argued the key lies in Section 295 of Zimbabwe’s 2013 Constitution, which protected farms covered by BIPPA agreements — land acquired by foreign investors before the 2000 land reform program.

“It’s not a reversal of the land reform at all,” Nzombe said, stressing that the move is rooted in Zimbabwe’s own constitutional commitments.

For him, the decision also sends a broader message: Zimbabwe wants to show investors and the international community that it can honor legal protections and country-to-country agreements.

“This was long overdue,” he added.

Watch the video to learn what could have been done differently, according to Nzombe, and what outcomes this decision can lead to.
