South African Reserve Bank Names New Chief Economist
In this role, Konstantin Makrelov will also sit on the SARB’s Monetary Policy Committee and Financial Stability Committee, among other duties, the bank noted in a statement.
"Dr. Makrelov is committed to developing research talent and supporting the next generation of economists. As part of these efforts, he initiated the SARB Winter School for postgraduate students."
Makrelov joined the SARB in 2018 as lead economist and became head of economic and climate change research in 2024, after spending 12 years at South Africa’s National Treasury working on fiscal forecasting and major government policies.
