Imported Inputs 'Damage Soils' in Burundi: Agriculture Expert
The fertilizers and pesticides acidify the soils and kill certain micro-organisms that are beneficial to plants, Adrien Sibomana, president of the Burundi Organic Agriculture Movement, told Sputnik Africa.
"We could quite easily free ourselves from them and practice agriculture that protects the environment and is profitable if done correctly. The solution is organic agriculture. If African states want to become food sovereign, they must not farm by importing inputs that they have not manufactured themselves when there are local substitutes available," he noted.
The African Union decided to make organic agriculture a priority in the 2000s, the speaker added.
