Kenya Moves From Pilot to Full Commercial Oil Production — 50,000 bpd Target Set

Production will start at around 20,000 bpd and gradually rise to 50,000 bpd, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi told lawmakers.

Kenya is expected to begin commercial oil production before the end of the year from the South Lokichar fields in Turkana, marking its entry into Africa’s oil-producing club.

Refining Reality Check: While oil production is now considered viable, refining faces major hurdles:

▫The Mombasa refinery was found economically unfeasible at current output levels

▫Sustainable refining requires 100,000–500,000 bpd

▫Kenya's initial capacity: far below that threshold

East African Regional Integration: Downstream investment depends on:

▫Future production growth

▫Regional integration

Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda are revisiting a shared regional refinery to reduce fuel import dependence, though no formal agreement has yet been reached.
