Zambia's Rejection of Tied US Health Deal Signals Shift From Aid 'at Any Cost': Kenyan Analyst
The Zambian government’s refusal to sign a proposed $2 billion US health agreement linked to a separate critical minerals deal marks a pivotal moment for African sovereignty, said Kenyan governance expert Prof. Fredrick Onyango Ogola.
"It signals a shift from 'we need capital at any cost' to 'capital must respect sovereignty and long-term value,'" he told Sputnik Africa.
Using life-saving health aid as a bargaining chip for mineral concessions raises serious ethical concerns, Ogola warned.
"You do not negotiate over minerals with human lives on the table. Medicine must heal, not to be weaponized for deals," he said.
The analyst argued that fragmentation weakens African leverage: "Africa must negotiate as one. When we speak in fragments, it is heard in whispers. When we speak together, it moves the world."
