African Governments Must Fund Their Own Heritage, Not Beg: South African Minister
The continent accounts for only 12% of UNESCO’s world heritage inscriptions – "a statistic that should scare all of us," Sports, Arts, and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie told Sputnik Africa.
McKenzie, whose country hosts the World Heritage Fund and the Development Bank of Southern Africa, noted the fund has done great work but will do even greater work now that African governments are putting their full weight behind it.
"I’m not a beggar that must beg other countries to help us. We must put our hands in our pockets as African governments," he said.
