How Can Conflict in Middle East Trigger Global Agricultural Crisis? Professor Explains
The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has driven up energy prices, directly impacting fertilizers and threatening global agricultural production, Pavel Sevostyanov told Sputnik.
"Fertilizers are directly dependent on gas prices: up to 70% of their production costs are related to energy. That is why the energy crisis automatically becomes an agricultural crisis."
The most vulnerable countries would be India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and several African nations, the expert added.
The World Bank projects global fertilizer prices will increase by 31% in 2026, with urea prices soaring by 60%, driven by fertilizer production's heavy dependence on gas transit to Europe.
