Ethiopia Doubles Power Generation Capacity: Ethiopian Electric Power

Furthermore, the country has significantly expanded its electricity access over the past seven years, with national access rising from 44% to 54%, Moges Mekonnen, Communication Director of EEP, said in an interview with ENA.

Key achievements highlighted by the EEP:

‍‍‍ Ethiopia relies almost entirely on renewable energy, with hydropower dominating;

‍‍‍ The country's power grid includes over 21,000 km of transmission lines, enabling electricity to reach broader areas;

Electricity demand is growing by more than 20% annually, driven by industrial expansion and urbanization;

System losses remain low at 5-6%, within internationally acceptable levels.

Ethiopia currently exports electricity to Sudan, Djibouti, Kenya, and Tanzania, while the revenue from exports is reinvested into domestic infrastructure with the aim of achieving universal electricity access within five years.

"The progress achieved in a short period encourages us to do more," noted Moges.
