Certain Animals' Populations Rise in Uganda: Report
The country continues to register the recovery of some notable species, with their populations increasing in recent years, according to the State of Wildlife Resources in Uganda Report 2026, issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).
Comparing the 2021–2022 and 2023–2025 counts, the animals showing the most significant rises in numbers are:
Buffalo: from 32,235 to 41,548
Hippopotamus: from 8,226 to 9,026
Zebras: from 17,762 to 20,942
However, the UWA raises concern over the decline in lion and elephant populations, which usually indicate the health of an ecosystem, the report stated.
Lions are now the most threatened large mammals in the country, with their populations dropping from 373 to 291 over the past five years, according to the UWA data.
Meanwhile, Tanzania's lion population has become the largest in the world, reaching an estimated 17,000.
