South Africa Can’t Grow Economically Without Fixing Water Crisis, Says Minister
All spheres of government must stop being “territorial” and work together to tackle the country’s water challenges, South African Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina told Sputnik Africa's Thabo Makwakwa at the extended President’s Coordinating Council meeting in Boksburg.
"No economic growth, [and] no investment will come as long as the situation of water and sanitation at a municipal level is at this appalling situation," she warned.
The minister welcomed the National Water Action Plan unveiled by President Ramaphosa but emphasized that municipalities cannot implement it alone.
Many municipalities lack technical officials, water engineers, and water scientists and therefore need assistance, Majodina explained.
She called on water boards to step in as implementing agents to support local governments.
