East African Community Must Improve Implementation of Its Programs: Burundian Researcher

After 27 years, the East African Community (EAC) is struggling to assert itself in a region plagued by conflicts, including the one in the DRC, and this undermines the bloc's credibility, Dionise Arakaza, a lecturer and researcher at the University of Burundi, told Sputnik Africa:

"We must not forget that each member country must retain its sovereignty and its own way of managing its internal affairs. That is why, even if the EAC has the good will to manage conflicts and stop them, there is a line the community cannot cross," he said.

ℹ To improve effectiveness, EAC must create frameworks to sanction member countries "that do not agree to honor or respect the programs or missions" carried out by the EAC, Arakaza suggested.
