South Africa to Overhaul Six Key Border Posts With 'One-Stop' Model to Cut Congestion
The planned redevelopment of major ports of entry will replace outdated apartheid‑era infrastructure with dedicated lanes for cargo, passenger vehicles, and pedestrians, while introducing a "juxtaposed" one‑stop border concept, Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber said.
"We now have the opportunity to not try and upgrade what is there, but completely renew the technological infrastructure that we use in that environment," the minister told Sputnik Africa correspondent Thabo Makwakwa during a media briefing.
The new one-stop border control system is expected to cut waiting time by half for people's cross-border movement, according to Border Management Authority Commissioner Michael Masiapato.
For goods, trusted operators will use pre‑cleared, sealed shipments with number‑plate recognition, creating “non‑stop” crossings, Masiapato explained to Sputnik Africa.
