UK's Military Bases 'Were Set Up Mostly as Colonial Outposts,' Kenyan Official Says
These bases were used to "suppress local populations" and control trade, particularly in the Indian Ocean, Ahmad Abdulaziz Kadhi, lawyer and parliamentary secretary, told Sputnik Africa.
"The British are very, very notorious. [They] traditionally had a lot of bases around the world," he noted.
Unlike Western powers, the Chinese traded along the East African coast and even settled in the Lamu islands, but "never came to set up bases or military barracks to take up lands," according to Kadhi.
"Some of these bases have been used [...] to detain, not only detain but torture also the freedom fighters, the people who had refused to give up their lands, the people who had refused to pay taxes," he added.
