Russian Specialists to Train South African Astronauts
South African National Space Agency and Russia will jointly launch an astronaut training program, the agency's CEO Humbulani Mudau told a Russian news outlet.
South Africa plans to train its first cosmonaut for an orbital mission in 2027, he was quoted as saying.
"We are ready to cooperate with South African partners on candidate selection and training on mutually beneficial terms and agreed timelines," Russia's space corporation Roscosmos said.
Russia is finalizing contracts with Asian, African, and Middle Eastern nations for cosmonaut training and telecom/Earth-sensing satellites, First Deputy PM Denis Manturov noted at the Russian Space Forum.
