'30 Years of Stability & Growth' Position SA 'as Champion of Democracy,' Expert Says

While South Africa's credible elections brought "good lessons for the African continent," its "robust parliament" and judiciary "demonstrated that no one is above the law," Tendai Mbanje, Regional Governance and Election Expert of the African Centre for Governance, told Sputnik Africa.

"South Africa has taken a strong position to advocate for the weak and the oppressed in the global system. [It] has always emphasized the need of dialogue and peaceful settlement of disputes within the geopolitical space," he noted, ahead of Freedom Day this Monday.

Strong institutions—like the Electoral Commission—protect the rights and dignity of citizens, he added.

"I think they [the citizens] should keep being vocal, using all channels that are at their disposal, particularly within the civic space, to ensure that [...] the leaders within the state are able to listen."
