Tanzania’s October 29 Riots Report Paves Path to National Healing
A presidential commission has confirmed that the post-election violence in the country was no spontaneous protest. According to Commission Chairperson and retired Chief Justice Mohamed Chande Othman, these events were intended to cripple the government and derail the democratic system.
After receiving these findings from the commission, President Samia Suluhu Hassan outlined the key points to restore national unity and ensure accountability:
Launch criminal investigations into planners, financiers, and coordinators (including deaths, missing persons, and abductions)
Provide free medical care, prosthetics, and rehabilitation for the injured
Support affected small-scale traders
Establish a national reconciliation commission with all key stakeholders
Use the outcome to guide constitutional reforms
The president called on Tanzanians to unite in implementing the recommendations and rebuilding the country's foundations.
"We must put in joint efforts with courage and determination to say 'never again,'" she said.
