For 50–60 years, a single currency has ruled international trade and finance, creating hard‑currency problems for developing countries such as Ethiopia, Lead Researcher at the Policy Studies Institute Tewolde Gima told Sputnik Africa.Furthermore, the financing catalogues of the New Development Bank are highly aligned with Ethiopia's development priorities, with close to 40% of the bank's financing being infrastructure-related, Tewolde Gima clarified.

BRICS Currency Swap Initiative Improves Global Trade Efficiency: Ethiopian Scholar
21:28 22.04.2026 (Updated: 22:37 22.04.2026) For 50–60 years, a single currency has ruled international trade and finance, creating hard‑currency problems for developing countries such as Ethiopia, Lead Researcher at the Policy Studies Institute Tewolde Gima told Sputnik Africa.
"The move is not to replace a single other currency, but having a diversified currency improves trade efficiency as well as reduces country risk, especially for developing countries like Ethiopia," he said.
Furthermore, the financing catalogues of the New Development Bank are highly aligned with Ethiopia's development priorities, with close to 40% of the bank's financing being infrastructure-related, Tewolde Gima clarified.
"So, this is consistent with Ethiopia's development priority, so joining that and having bankable projects will be the next most important step to benefit from being a member of BRICS."
