Orthodox people are ready to sacrifice themselves for their brothers and sisters, so the Russians came to help Christian Boers in their fight against the British over 100 years ago, Archpriest Daniel Lugovoi, Rector of the Russian Orthodox Church of St Sergius of Radonezh, told Sputnik Africa.
"They heard that Boers were suffering a lot. So, of course, some soldiers like Leo Pokrowsky came, but also Russian nurses, doctors came to organize hospitals and field hospitals."
It is important to pay tribute to the fallen Russian soldiers, who fought along with South Africans, greatly suffering from British colonialism, Annatjie Le Roux, Chairlady of the Old Parsonage Museum in Utrecht, said.
The second Anglo-Boer war took place from 1899 to 1902, when the Boer republics fought against the British colonial rule. More than 200 Russian volunteers came to support the Boers in their struggle.
