The West—led by the US—has controlled the direction of international justice since World War II by dominating institutions like the ICC and maneuvering through legal compromises, Elias told Sputnik. The ICC has fallen under Western political influence, serving not justice but the expansion of Western hegemony in Africa and beyond, the professor argued. However, he noted that "Russian resilience has changed the equation."Strengthening international justice requires a more active role from other global powers, especially China, to create a balanced system where the court is not just "an obedient tool in American hands," Elias concluded.

ICC Became 'Tool of Western Hegemony' Used to Isolate African Leaders, Says Researcher
16:37 22.04.2026 (Updated: 17:40 22.04.2026) The International Criminal Court (ICC) has been far removed from the principles on which it was founded, according to Professor Eli Georgi Elias, a university researcher specializing in international relations and strategy.
The West—led by the US—has controlled the direction of international justice since World War II by dominating institutions like the ICC and maneuvering through legal compromises, Elias told Sputnik.
"Economically promising African countries face the duality of the ICC and Western hegemony. The US directs the court to isolate African regimes and prosecute their leaders," he explained.
The ICC has fallen under Western political influence, serving not justice but the expansion of Western hegemony in Africa and beyond, the professor argued. However, he noted that "Russian resilience has changed the equation."
Strengthening international justice requires a more active role from other global powers, especially China, to create a balanced system where the court is not just "an obedient tool in American hands," Elias concluded.
