Africa's Missing Link is Political Unification, Not Just Economic Deals: Samia Nkrumah
Without a common political basis, Africa's economic frameworks and trade agreements will take "a very, very long time" to deliver real change, Samia Nkrumah, daughter of Ghana's first President Kwame Nkrumah, told Sputnik Africa.
While initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area are "superb agreements," they lack the political foundation needed for swift collective action, she argued.
"Our father in [1963] had advised us that we need to sit down and start with some kind of common ground on political unification," she said, calling for a federation of African states with shared economic planning, a common foreign policy, and a unified military.
The easiest path to economic sovereignty, the politician added, is for Africa to "team up and pool our resources" and break the colonial structure of exporting raw materials without adding value.
"As long as we remain like in that low on the value chain, on that unproductive situation, […] we will be neocolonial states," she warned. "We desperately need that unity."
