Zimbabwe Lowers Fuel Prices Amid Middle East Turmoil

The price of blended petrol was reduced to $2.08 per liter from $2.23 and diesel pegged at $2.09 per liter, down from $2.11, according to an official statement of The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority on Friday.

"Members of the public are advised not to engage in any panic buying or hoarding as the country is assured of adequate stocks for a period spanning over 3 months," it stated.

The prices come into force "effective immediately" and are attributed to an "increase in blending levels from E5 to E20"—meaning 20% of the fuel is now locally produced ethanol, which is cheaper than imported refined fuel and less exposed to international oil price fluctuations, according to the statement.

"Government prioritized security of supplies through market sensitive pricing and reduction of taxes to cushion consumers and the economy at large," ZERA added.
