The 2026 National Local Economic Development Summit is being held on Wednesday and Thursday in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng province, bringing together government, the private sector, academia, and development partners to drive coordinated solutions for inclusive local growth, a Sputnik Africa correspondent reported.
President Cyril Ramaphosa's core message at the event:
🟠Municipalities must shift from project-based thinking to becoming reliable "operating systems" for growth—prioritizing basic infrastructure maintenance and cutting red tape to unlock small business potential.
🟠With $54.3 billion in recent investment pledges, the president stressed that turning national momentum into local jobs depends on fixing service delivery and professionalizing local government.
