South Africa Returns Sacred Chapungu Bird Stolen During Colonial Era to Zimbabwe: Ministry

South Africa has also repatriated the remains of eight Zimbabweans that were taken for research purposes during the colonial era, the Department of Sports, Art, and Culture announced.

"We must return what does not belong to us," South African sports, arts, and culture minister Gayton McKenzie told reporters on the sideline of a handover ceremony in Cape Town.

The stone-carved Chapungu bird, a sacred symbol for Zimbabweans, was stolen 137 years ago from the Great Zimbabwe ruins.

According to local belief, the Chapungu bird carries messages from the gods and ancestors, and seeing it in flight is considered a sign of good fortune.
