Cocoa Overtakes Oil in Cameroon's Exports — But Expert Urges Local Processing, Not Raw Exports

The very strong international demand has established cocoa as a driving force in Cameroon's exports, Thierry Djoussi, president of the Association of Cameroonian Journalists for Agriculture and Development, told Sputnik Africa.

The country must now focus on processing and encourage local consumption, he noted.

“The government must discourage the export of beans. Cocoa can be used to make soap and beauty oils. Some are even trying to produce wine made from cocoa. If most of the production remains local and supplies these industries, we can create a remarkable industrial base,” Djoussi emphasized.

A video from social media shows cocoa harvesting.
