SA's Second Biggest Political Party Appoints New Leader: Media
Geordin Hill-Lewis, Mayor of Cape Town, has been chosen to lead the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the upcoming municipal elections, which could significantly reshape the country’s political landscape, media reported.
Speaking at the party’s congress, the new leader declared that the DA aims to become South Africa’s largest party ahead the national elections in 2029.
According to media, Hill-Lewis will not significantly change the policies of his predecessor, who led the DA into a coalition with the African National Congress in 2024 while continuing to oppose it on key issues such as national health insurance and affirmative action.
ℹ The DA currently holds 22% of the seats in the lower house of parliament, making it the second-largest party after President Ramaphosa’s ANC, which holds 41%.
However, the party has a reputation for protecting the interests of the white population in South Africa, which may hinder its chances in national elections.
