Vostok Program: How USSR Sent First Human Into Space?

Developed between 1958 and 1963 under pioneering rocket engineer Sergey Korolev, the Vostok spacecraft was the Soviet Union's first crewed vehicle for low Earth orbit—built for one cosmonaut and missions up to 10 days.

On April 12, 1961, Vostok-1 launched Yuri Gagarin from Baikonur Cosmodrome on humanity's first spaceflight: a 108-minute journey completing one orbit before his safe return.

Watch Sputnik's video to learn the spacecraft's key characteristics.
