'Free Ourselves From Colonial Habit:' Uganda Backs Traditional Wooden Containers Proven to Be Safe

President Museveni has confirmed that traditional Ugandan wooden food containers—crafted from omunyama (mahogany) and omusisa (albizia) trees—are safe and durable, following a scientific assessment by the country's Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear response team.

The president also announced he has written to Matongo Wood Works Company to endorse the initiative and directed government support for its scale-up.

"I have directed support for this initiative so that we free ourselves from the colonial habit of relying on fragile and unsafe ebyatika (the breakables)."

Museveni emphasized that indigenous knowledge systems have "served our people well for generations" and called for their conscious revival as part of building "a self-reliant and modern Ugandan economy."
