African Nations Must Сreate Own Tech, Not Lean on Western: SA Expert

Africa must build and host its own infrastructure, including telescopes and dedicated observation sites, Takalani Nemaungani, Chief Director: Astronomy, Department of Science and Innovation of South Africa told Sputnik Africa.

"And also invest in certain technologies, the work packages that can position us as global players on certain components of these technological systems."

Within the BRICS, the speaker said, South Africa has access to the BRICS Intelligent Telescope and Data Network — an initiative that connects telescopes across BRICS nations to jointly pursue common scientific goals.

"So, it's important to work together with BRICS and countries like Russia to ensure that we build these alternative technologies for sustainability and development of the continent," the Chief Director of the BRICS Astronomy Working Group Secretariat said.
