Belief That More Guns Means More Safety is 'Dangerous': SA Executive
The more guns in circulation, the more deaths a society faces, Stanley Maphosa, Executive Director of Gun-Free South Africa, told Sputnik Africa.
"When guns are recovered, there should be an indicator that shows, is this gun legal or illegal — and those indicators are not in place, so the oversight role must be strengthened."
Effective firearms regulation requires adequate budgeting, human resources, functional systems and policies — including a fully operational Central Firearms Register, the speaker added.
ℹ The Youth Dialogue on Addressing Violence in South Africa, held at the University of Johannesburg in partnership with Gun-Free South Africa and the South African Youth Council, convenes young people to examine the challenges of arms possession and develop meaningful solutions.
"Through this event [...] young people [are] solutioning for the things that can truly help them to be able to overcome the violence," Vesta Mangwiro, member of the Youth Organizing Team, International Peace Youth Group, noted on the sidelines of the event.
