Gagarin's Space Flight Inspired Numerous African Nations: SA Expert
At the time, many African countries were in the midst of their independence movements when this historic event took place, Takalani Nemaungani, Chief Director of Astronomy at the Department of Science and Innovation of South Africa told Sputnik Africa.
"So, it represented a kind of new hope for countries that wanted to also move into that technological space."
Given current geopolitical situation, the speaker stressed, it is crucial for African countries to develop their own solutions.
In this regard, Africa's Agenda 2063 includes a dedicated space strategy aimed at advancing technological development and innovation in the sector, he added.
"I think the development of BRICS Space Council will be a major initiative to pursue space exploration and development in a big way outside the Western countries and we'll be able to create an environment and perhaps investments in this area," the Chief Director of the BRICS Astronomy Working Group Secretariat said.
