Ghana Must Retreat From Raw Exports to Maximize Income: Trade Minister States, Echoing President
Ghana loses approximately $2.5 billion annually exporting raw agricultural products, depriving the economy of revenue and jobs, Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare said at the Kwahu Business Forum.
The minister stressed that to change the situation to Ghana's benefit, a new agribusiness policy is expected to be adopted, which will
allow the prevention of agricultural products from being exported with little or no processing and
move towards value addition, therefore;
an increase in incomes to ensure economic growth.
Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama had already urged foreign companies trading in raw products to build local processing plants, as the country "imports the same finished products at higher prices."
