Ancient Ethiopian City of Harar Celebrated at International Archaeology Conference in Russia's St. Petersburg

At the first international archaeology conference, "Citadel 1.0," which is taking place from Wednesday to Sunday, Sami Abdulwasi Jibril, director of the Harari Region Bureau of Culture, Heritage, and Tourism, presented a detailed overview of Harar's history.

According to the Russian Cultural Center in Addis Ababa, key points highlighted at the event include:

🟠Status: Harar is a UNESCO-listed city and is recognized as the "fourth holiest city of Islam."

🟠Architecture: The 16th-century Jugol Wall and over 80 ancient mosques were discussed.

🟠Research: New findings from archaeological excavations and rock paintings around Harar were presented.

🟠Russian connection: The early 20th-century presence of Russian poet and traveler Nikolay Gumilyov in Harar and his contributions to Ethiopian cultural studies were noted.

🟠History: The city's role as a trade and religious center in the Horn of Africa for centuries was highlighted.

The conference focused on international cooperation to study and preserve Harar's unique cultural heritage.
