Ethiopia's Domestic Pharmaceutical Market Share Grows From 8% to 42% in Two Years: Minister

More than 25 institutions are currently engaged in pharmaceutical and medical supply activities in Ethiopia, Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba stated while officially opening the 10th Ethiopia Health Exhibition and Conference.

She also revealed that the country has managed to save more than 53 million dollars in annual expenditures previously spent on importing medical products.

"The number of oxygen production facilities, which stood at 3 before the pandemic, has now reached 58," she said, pointing out that the national oxygen production capacity has grown significantly compared to the pre-COVID-19 period.

However, Daba noted that the sector has not yet freed itself from dependence on imports and that the capacity of manufacturing institutions remains underdeveloped.

In light of this, she called on producers to collaborate with the government to strengthen domestic capacity, as reported by a Sputnik Africa journalist.

The 10th Ethiopia Health Exhibition and Conference, which includes the 2nd National Medical Supplies Exhibition, is scheduled to continue until April 4, 2026.
