Cape Verde's Leader Calls on 20 African Nations to Join Forces Against Atlantic Ocean Plastic
After visiting Cape Verde's largest marine reserve, President Jose Maria Neves witnessed tonnes of industrial fishing waste, which makes up an estimated 75% of the accumulated debris—harming sea turtle nesting sites on Santa Luzia, the nation's only uninhabited island.
He called the plastic pollution a transboundary issue affecting ocean health and blue economies across African Atlantic states.
In his letter, he proposed:
▪Joint waste management policies;
▪Increased use of biodegradable, eco-friendly fishing gear;
▪Environmental responsibility clauses in fishing agreements.
Jose Maria Neves urged a united African voice at global ocean conferences to secure financing for transboundary waste solutions and turn this environmental threat into an opportunity to protect Africa's marine heritage.
